Broadcaster reaches out to Haiti

On 28 January 2010 the South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) reached out to Haitians when they organised a two-and-half hours telethon. Senior SABC officials and public figures fielded calls from South Africans who opened  their wallets in a quest to help rescue Haiti.

The telethon was live during a Morning Live breakfast show on channel SABC2. Public figures such as hip-hop musician Zuluboy, Andile Galeshewe, Kaos Matu, SABC acting head of news Phil Molefe and group chief executive Solly Mokoete were amongst those who answered calls to raise funds for the relief effort following the devastating earthquake in Haiti early January.

The broadcaster will run the telethon and SMS line for the next month (February), SMS which charge R10.00. The first day of the telethon raised about R800 000, the money raised will be handed over to the International Relations and Cooperation Department for the handover.
