Media Support Activities

Self-regulation is regarded as the most effective way of promoting media professionalism and raising standards. Attainment of this objective will contribute greatly to media freedom within the SADC region. Over the past seven years, MISA has been active in promoting the establishment of self-regulation mechanisms within the region as well as raising awareness on the need for media to adopt code of ethics in order to create an environment whereby media become more professional and responsive and accountable to its readers and society in general.

MISA is also embarking on a project to assist media institutions to effectively respond to the HIV/AIDS pandemic. The focus of the campaign is to facilitate the formulation of policies and other internal mechanism by media to respond and deal with issues of HIV/AIDS.

South Africa had national election on the April 14. MISA-SA's intervention was by way of assistance to the media to improve reporting standards and, in so doing, better facilitate public understanding and involvement in decision making and democracy

Programme Objectives

In addition to its advocacy function, MISA has a role to play in strategically nurturing the media sector.; It will do so by undertaking support initiatives that draw on MISA's comparative advantages. MISA has identified two areas in which, given its experience, structure and knowledge, it is particularly well disposed to provide the media sector with support, including:

  1. Enhancing media accountability and professionalism. Poorly skilled media workers are a drawback to attaining an independent, pluralist and competent media environment that promotes access to a diversity of views and opinions
  2. Reducing the information void in Southern Africa by promoting a culture of information-seeking and enhancing access to information.
